I have a '15 overland and have had jeep dealer replaced the shocks and then the upper mounts some time ago but the noise remained and slowly getting worse so I had a look myself and worked out that the rubber in the mount was moving up and down inside the two halves of the mount so used a 2" hole saw to cut out a disc of 1/8th insertion rubber and placed it inside the mount on top of the rubber and under the top plate of the mount and is now the quietest it has ever been. Took less than one hour and no need to take shock out altogether, just undo the top two studs and lower the axle enough to take the top plate off.

good solution, i wondered about that, i lubed the top of the rubber bush where it hits on the top plate, and it did a little to quite it.

i couldn't find anything to use as a packer,

ill have to have another look

oh but with the Bilsteins they are a little longer and much harder to compress, so getting them behind the fibre inner guard can be a challenge for us older fellows

hehehe

but thanks that will be my next trial

Has anyone got a diagram/picture of the the rear top shock absorber mounts showing the difference between the early and later modified one on the WK2. Mine is an Jan '14 build and I am unsure whether it has the early or later mounts.
I started work on mine today to do the the modification mentioned by GMEMUD to stop the "chuckle"but it wouldn't work with my mounts. The top mount is a one piece design with no top plate above the nut on the top of the shock.
I bought CD manual on line but it is no help in regard to the shock mount!

While looking at part numbers 68029590AA to 68029590AF maybe a slight difference in the rubber bush but hard to tell from an online pic, I do know suspension type, air, self leveling or plain old shocks are different, not having pulled mine off yet it does look like a poxy idea for a mount.... this link to rockauto shows the latest version....
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...=2199&jsn=2199

I should imagine something between the mount and the top of the shock would be required to stop noise transference from the shockie...... hope this helps anyway.

Then again why couldn't it be the lower mounts ??? No probs with mine yet at 50K but if they do I will have them dismantled quick smart...or just remove my hearing aids, works wonders.

.....

in my case I'm not convinced that it is the upper shock mount

ive had the mount out and lubed it- no fix
had the mount out and left the top plate off- no fix
replaced the top mount with a KYB unit - no fix
replaced the rear shocks with bilsteins - no fix.

removed the mud flaps in case they were causing a rattle
emptied the boot nuh no change

for me its not undulating pumps its those short sharp bumps where you think the seat back is going to kill your kidneys that i get the noise

im now of the opinion in my case that its the upper spring perch/mount

the upper coils are wrapped in some sort of plastic tubing but its all brittle and coming off.

i tried sticking some closed cell foam between the coils and it may have quietened them down.

today after washing my car and liberally spraying water around the suspension
it seems a lot quieter. so im starting to think i might up grade my rear springs

see what happens

my only solution otherwise is to run the tyres at 30 psi (20 inch rims)

An aftermarket set of springs and shocks would certainly give an answer one way or the other, a badly bedded spring will make a racket for sure, I also hate the poly bushes........

Drover, the rockauto picture of the mount shows the actual mount virtually the same as mine, but the rubber bush inside it quite different, coming right to the top of mount. It would have been interesting to see a picture of that mount with the shock assembled in it. On mine the rubber bush, washer and nut are deep down inside the top of the mount.
Whether this would happen to the rubber bush in the rockauto one once the shock top nut and washer were tensioned down would be interesting to see.
John.
