if you plug it into the speaker, you wont damage it if it is on backwards... Since it is only a signal - and not electric current the speaker will be fine.

The way you can tell, is if you plug it in - and then play some music through it.... the bass notes should sound "bassy", if you dont have any bass at all - then its backwards. This is the way i tell which way they go, although - i did work for an AudioVisual company for a while... so i have an "ear" for that stuff...

Will, yeah what I found was with it round the wrong way, there was a sort of "click" when the mid range was trying to produce the bass frequencies.

On some of the earlier TJs without sound bars there was a spare 6 pin plug at the bottom left (passenger side) of the rollbar. soundbar plug has 2 rows of 3 pins, power for the light is the centre 2 pins. spk L one outside pr of pins, spr R other outside pr if pins all the +s one row, all the -s the other row just depends on what way you are looking @ the plug.
And yeah the common colour is usually the - side.
